Dance
Dance is music, exercise, history and human connection rolled into one. You can't do a contra dance or a swing dance alone — that's the whole point.
Why it matters now
- Social dance puts strangers of all ages in the same room, cooperating.
- It's physical learning: balance, rhythm, memory and coordination at any age.
- Every culture has its dances; learning one is a doorway into its history.
- For kids, dance builds confidence and discipline the way sports do — with music.
Try this week (no screen required)
- Find a beginner-friendly contra, swing or ballroom night near you; most start with a free lesson.
- Put on a song in the kitchen and teach the kids a dance from your teenage years.
- Watch a live performance — a local ballet company or a school recital.
- Ask an older relative what they danced to when they were young.

Questions people ask
Do I need a partner for social dancing?
Usually not. Contra, English country, swing and many ballroom groups rotate partners and welcome people who come alone.
What age can kids start dance?
Many studios offer creative-movement classes for preschoolers; more structured technique classes often start around age 6 to 8. Ask local studios what they recommend.
